Grade Level Units:
Kindergarten: Students in Kindergarten learn about how to log in, how to access different programs,and how to add their name and sentences to pictures in Tux Paint and Kid Pix, mostly.They learn how to follow directions and how to do assignments.They also learn about tools, the difference between natural, man-made and technology tools, how they work, and how they are used.
First Grade: Students in First Grade learn, also, about tools but they also learn about where different technology tools are used and how there may be different tools at home, in the community and at school. First graders also learn about keeping safe online, the importance of using passwords, and how to use their own user names and passwords to log into the school computers. They learn about the good and bad uses of technology and how to create pages, pictures and documents on the computer.
Second Grade: Students in Second Grade learn how to create their own passwords to be safe on the computer. They learn how to create pictures, save pictures, and then find and create a slide show using their own pictures they had saved. They also learn how to evaluate technology tools and learn how technology has changed over the years. They learn how to keyboard properly and practice their keyboarding skills diligently.
Third Grade: Students in Third Grade practice their keyboarding diligently, working hard to learn home row keys and how to improve their skills.They are introduced to using Word, changing font styles, colors, sizes, etc.. They also learn about changes in technology throughout the decades and how those changes have impacted lives.
Fourth Grade: Students in Fourth Grade begin learning about Word, what can be done in Word such as a flyer, a chart, a research document, etc. They are introduced to Publisher and taught how to create an invitation..Power Point is briefly introduced in Fourth Grade as well. They also are exposed to Internet Safety information and create rules for themselves and their classmates to keep them safe online. Keyboarding is practiced on an ongoing basis as well.
Fifth Grade: Students in Fifth Grade are mostly learning Microsoft Office options. They begin with Word and refresh their memory with changing font sizes, colors, styles, etc... and creating an invitational flyer. They then work in Word to create a newsletter in a collaborative effort that deals with environmental issues such as endangered animals, recycling, etc... After they are comfortable with Word, Excel is introduced as a way to keep track of information in a chart format. They also learn how technology is good and bad and how it changes and impacts lives. Power Point is presented and worked with as students learn how to add animation, transitions, text boxes, etc... Keyboarding is practiced regularly, also.
Sixth Grade: Students in Sixth Grade make advanced changes to Word documents, create collaboratively a newsletter in Word and then one in Publisher comparing and contrasting the two. They also learn how to add more to their chart in Excel, and create a technology career power point as they research careers in technology and publish their information using the power point program from Microsoft Office.
